Afterthought Heel

There are 19 stitches available to work across the bottom of the heel opening.  With right side (outside) of sock facing you, attach yarn to 10th st.  Ch 1.  Sc to last stitch of bottom of opening.  Sc 2 tog by combining the last stitch in the bottom of the heel opening with the first stitch in the top of the heel opening.

Sc across the top of heel opening to last stitch, combining the last stitch in the top of the heel opening with the first stitch in the bottom of the heel opening with a sc 2 tog.  Sc across bottom of heel opening to starting ch.  Mark last stitch in round.  Do not join.

Sc in starting ch and continue in rounds (about 9 rounds will be necessary), always working 2 sc tog at the ends of the opening (combining the stitches on either side of the sc tog in the previous round), reducing the size of the opening.

Round ends will "move" toward the right, and when approximately 9 stitches are left unworked on the top and bottom, fasten off leaving a long (12" or so) tail.  This tail will be at or near the right side of the opening.

Turn sock inside out.  Thread the tail through a tapestry needle, and sew up seam.  Weave in end.

Wash the socks inside out for best results.  Please feel free to e-mail me with any questions or comments!
