Basic
Granny Square
Turning a granny square at the beginning of each round gives it a reversible quality...

Ch 4, join with sl st to form a ring.

Round 1:  Ch 3 (allowing this ch to serve as the first dc in the round).  2 dc in ring, ch 2, 3 dc in ring.  *Ch 2, 3 dc in ring*.  Repeat between * 1 more time.  Ch 2.  Join with sl st to top of ch 3 that began the round.  Four clusters (of 3 dc each) in ring.

Round 2:  Ch 3, turn.  2 dc in ch 2 sp between clusters in Round 1.  Ch 2, 3 dc in same sp (corner made).  *In next ch 2 sp, 3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc*.  Repeat between * 2 more times.  Join with sl st to top of ch 3 that began the round.  Eight clusters in round.

Round 3:  Ch 3, turn.  2 dc in sp between clusters.  *In next ch 2 (corner) sp, 3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc.  3 dc in next sp between clusters*.  Repeat between * 2 more times.  In next ch 2 (corner) sp, 3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc.  Join with sl st to top of ch 3 that began the round.  12 clusters in round.

Round 4 and beyond:  Ch 3, turn.  2 dc in sp between clusters.  Work as for Round 3 --
3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc in each of the four ch 2 (corner) sp, and 3 dc in each sp between clusters along the sides.

To change colors, fasten off at the end of a round and leave enough yarn to weave in the end all the way through the ch 2 sp of the next corner.  Tie the new yarn on with a double knot in that ch 2 space (and over the end of the last color).  The 6 dc worked over the ends of the new colors hide each securely.
