Double-Edged Scarf
Size H or 8 (5mm) crochet hook.

2 skeins Caron Simply Soft yarn (color pictured here is called
Passion)

Chain multiples of 19 to scarf length desired (a chain of 209
stitches was
used here, and the scarf measures excluding the lacy edging).

Row 1:  Ch 2.  Allowing ch 2 to serve as first dc in row, dc in
4th ch
from hook and in each ch to end.

Rows 2 through 10:  Ch 2, turn.  Allowing ch 2 to serve as
first dc in
row, dc in each remaining st to end of row.

Row 11 (first edging row):  Ch 1, turn.  Working along long
side of
scarf, sc in each dc to end of row.

Working along short side of scarf, 2 sc in each row-ending dc
of scarf
rows 6 through 10.  1 sc in row-ending dc of scarf row 5.  2
sc in each
row-ending dc of scarf rows 1 through 4.

Working along second long side of scarf, sc in each dc to end
of row.

Working along second short end of scarf, 2 sc in each
row-ending dc of
scarf rows 1 through 4.  1 sc in row-ending dc of scarf row
5.  2 sc in
each row-ending dc of scarf rows 6 through 10.  Join with
slip stitch to
turningh ch.

Row 12 (second edging row):  Working along a short end of
scarf, ch 1,
turn.  Sc in same st that ch 1 came from (these two stitches
are actually
part of the long side.  You'll see how this works out at the
end of this
edging row.)  2 sc in next st.  Sc in next 7 st.  Ch 3, sk 3 st.  
Sc in next 7
st.  2 sc in next (last) st.

Now working along a long side, 2 sc in first st.  Sc in next 7
st.  Ch 3, sk
3 st.  *Sc in next 16 st.  Ch 3, sk 3 st.*  Repeat between * to
within 8 st
of end.  Sc in next 7 st.  2 sc in next (last) st.

Now working along the other short edge, 2 sc in first st.  Sc
in next 7 st.  
Ch 3, sk 3 st.  Sc in next 7 st.  2 sc in next (last) st.

Now working along a long side, 2 sc in first st.  Sc in next 7
st.  Ch 3, sk
3 st.  *Sc in next 16 st.  Ch 3, sk 3 st.*  Repeat between * to
within 7 st
of end.  Sc in next 7 st.  Join with sl st to top of ch 1 that
started this
edging row.  You actually worked the entire 4-stitch corner at
the
beginning.)

Row 13 (third edging row): Ch 1, turn.  Allow turning ch to
serve as first
st in row, **sc in each st to within 3 st of first ch-3 space
made in the
previous row.  Ch 1, skip those remaining 3 st before the
ch-3 sp. *In
the space, (dc, ch 1) six times.  Sk 3 st.  Sc in next 3 st.  Ch
4, sk 4 st.  
Sc in next 3 st.  Ch 1, sk 3 st.*

Repeat between * up to last ch 3 sp on the long side you're
working on.  
In that ch 3 sp, (dc, ch 1) six times.  Sk 3 st.  Sc in each st,
working 2 sc
in each of the two cornermost stitches.

Sc in each stitch to within 3 st of the first (and only) ch-3
space on this
short side.  Ch 1, skip those remaining 3 st before the ch-3
sp.  In the
ch-3 space, (dc, ch 1) six times.  Sk 3 st.  Sc in each st,
working 2 sc in
each of the two cornermost stitches.

See above starting at ** to finish other two sides.  Join w/sl st
to top of
turning ch 1.

Row 14 (fourth edging row):  Ch 1, turn.  Allowing ch 1 to
serve as first
st in row, *sc in each st to within 3 sc before the next ch
1-sp.  Ch 1.
**In ch-1 space and each of the next 6 ch-1 spaces, make a
3-dc
cluster (see Note below) and ch 1.  Sk next 3 st.*  Repeat
between *
once.  2 sc in ch-4 sp.  Ch 1. Sk next 3 st.**

Repeat between ** all the way around scarf, simply working
sc's around
corners where there are no ch-4 spaces.  Join with sl st to top
of turning
ch.  Fasten off.  Weave in ends.

(Note:  to make a 3-dc cluster, yo, insert hook, pull through
once, yo,
pull through 2 loops on hook, yo, insert hook, pull through
once, yo, pull
through 2 loops on hook, yo, insert hook, pull through once,
yo, pull
through 2 loops on hook, yo, pull through remaining loops on
hook for a
3-dc cluster).
