Rounds 6 - 10:  Ch 1, turn.  Sc in next 23 st.  Join w/sl st to top of beginning ch 1.  24 stitches in each round.

Foot

Round 11:  Ch 1.  Hdc in next 23 st (if you want, do the hdcs in the back loops only across the top of the sock to create a little rib).  Mark the last st, so you can determine where the rounds end later.

Rounds 12 - End of Foot Section:  Continue working hdc rounds (without joining or turning) until sock length is approximately 2 inches from the back of the heel when tried on (or about 11 rows of hdc for a size 5/6 shoe, 13 rows of hdc for a size 7/8 shoe, and 15 rows of hdc for a size 9/10 shoe).  You might want to increase by one or two hdc on the bottom of the sock during one or two rows as you near the point where the sock begins to hit the wider part of the foot, just before stopping for the heel.

Heel

Lay the sock flat with the bottom facing you.  Divide the total stitches in the last round by 2 (round up if necessary to get an odd number), and place markers at eith side so that this number of stitches is available to work.  For example, if the last round of the foot was 26 sc, place markers at either side of the sock so that 13 stitches are available across the bottom.

Depending on how many rounds there were, you will have to do one of two things to reach the center of the bottom of the sock:  1 sc and as many sl sts as necessary to reach the center stitch
OR rip out as many stitches as necessary to finish the row at the center stitch on the bottom of the sock with 1 sc and 1 sl st.

Row 1:  Ch 1 (beginning chs do not count as stitches in this section and will not be worked).  Sc in same st that ch 1 came from.  Sl st in next st.

Row 2:  Ch 1, turn.  Sc in same st that ch 1 came from.  Sc in next sc.  Sl st in next st (a hdc or a sl st in the last round of the foot).

Row 3:  Ch 1, turn.  Sc in same st that ch 1 came from.  Sc in next 2 sc.  Sl st in next st (a hdc or a sl st in last round of foot).

Row 4:  Ch 1, turn.  Sc in same st that ch 1 came from.  Sc in next 3 sc.  Sl st in next st (a hdc or a sl st in last round of foot).

Continue in pattern, adding one sc to each row, until the markers are reached.

Ankle/Calf

Depending on how many rows you've done (which will determine whether you end up working on the inside or the outside of the sock), you can either continue rounds of hdc (if you end up on the outside),
OR ch 1, turn and continue rounds of hdc.  Mark the last stitch in the round so you can determine where the rounds end later).  During the first round, work 2 hdc together (picking up the stitch that the last sl st of the heel went into) on each side of the sock to prevent the appearance of holes.  If you've increased, go around a couple of rounds and then decrease back to 24 st per row by working 2 hdc together in as many stitches as necessary (on either side) to narrow down the sock as it approaches the ankle.

Continue working 24 st per round until sock reaches desired height (20 rounds shown).  Instead of last 2 hdcs in last round, work a sc and a sl st.

Cuff

Round 1:  Ch 2 (beginning chs count as first stitch in rounds again now).  Dc in next 23 st.  Join w/sl st to top of ch 2.  24 stitches in round.

Round 2:  Ch 2.  *Fpdc around next dc.  Hdc in next dc.*  Repeat between * to end of round.  Join w/sl st to top of ch 2.

Round 3:  Ch 2.  *Fpdc around next fpdc.  Hdc in next hdc.*  Repeat between * to end of round.  Join w/sl st to top of ch 2.

Round 4:  Crab stitch all the way round top of sock.  Fasten off.  Weave in ends.
