Stitch Markers

TOE SECTION:  Ch 8.

Round 1:  2 sc in 2nd ch from hook.  Sc in next 5 ch.  3 sc in next
ch.  6 sc across bottom of foundation chain.  Mark last stitch in
round.  Do not join.  16 stitches in round.
Round 2:  2 sc in next sc.  Sc in each of next 7 sc.  2 sc in next sc.  Sc in each of next 7 sc.  
18 stitches in round.

Round 3:  Sc in next sc.  2 sc in next sc.  Sc in each of next 8 sc.  2 sc in next sc.  Sc in each
of next 7 sc.  20 stitches in round.

Round 4:  Sc in next 2 sc.  2 sc in next sc.  Sc in each of next 9 sc.  2 sc in next sc.  Sc in
each of next 7 sc.  22 stitches in round.

Round 5:  Sc in next 3 sc.  2 sc in next sc.  Sc in each of next 10 sc.  2 sc in next sc.  Sc in
each of next 7 sc.  24 stitches in round.

Round 6:  Sc in next 4 sc.  2 sc in next sc.  Sc in each of next 11 sc.  2 sc in next sc.  Sc in
each of next 7 sc.  26 stitches in round.

Round 7:  Sc in next 5 sc.  2 sc in next sc.  Sc in each of next 12 sc.  2 sc in next sc.  Sc in
each of next 7 sc.  28 stitches in round.

Round 8:  Sc in next 6 sc.  2 sc in next sc.  Sc in each of next 13 sc.  2 sc in next sc.  Sc in
each of next 7 sc.  30 stitches in round.

Rounds 9 - 12:  Sc in each sc.  30 stitches in each round.  (Using the marked stitch at the end
of Round 1 as a guide, you will notice that the ending stitch of each round appears to "move"
up and to the right across what will be the back or bottom of the sock).  Do not fasten off at
the end of Round 12.

FOOT SECTION:

Lay the sock flat with the top facing you.  Determine by eye and mark  the 1st and 9th of the
center 9 top stitches. Continue sc in each st to within 2 stitches of the first marker.  Sl st in
next st (there will still be one unworked stitch before the marker).

Row 1:  Ch 1, turn (turning ch counts as first stitch in this and all subsequent foot section
rows).  Sc in each st across back of sock to within one stitch of other marker (in other words,
leave one stitch unworked before the marked stitch).  V-stitch (dc, ch 1, dc) in marked stitch.  
Sk next st.  Sc in next st.  Skip next st.  V-stitch in next st.  Sk next st.  Sc in next st.  Sk next
st.  V-stitch in marked st.  Join w/sl st to top of turning ch.

Row 2:  Ch 1, turn.  (V-stitch in ch 1 sp of next V-stitch.  Sc in next sc) three times.  Sc in
each st across back of sock.  Join w/sl st to top of turning ch.

Row 3:  Ch 1, turn.  Sc in each sc across back of sock.  (V-stitch in ch 1 sp of next V-stitch.  
Sc in next sc) two times.  V-stitch in ch 1 sp of next V-stitch.  Join w/sl st to top of turning ch.

Rows 4 - however many are needed :  Repeat Rows 2 and 3 until sock measures 2-1/4 to
2-1/2" from the back of the heel when tried on.  5 repeats are shown here for a size 9/10 shoe
size.

ANKLE/LEG SECTION:

Row 1:  As for Row 2 in the FOOT SECTION.

Row 2:  Ch 1, turn.  2 sc in each of next two st.  Sc in next 13 st.  2 sc in each of next two st.  
(Sc in next sc, V-stitch in ch sp of next V-Stitch) three times.  Join w/sl st to top of turning ch.  
34 stitches in row.

Row 3:  Ch 1, turn.  (V-stitch in ch sp of next V-stitch, sc in next sc) three times.  Sc in next 2
st.  Ch 17 loosely.  Skip 17 stitches.  Sc in next 2 sc.  Join w/sl st to top of turning ch.

Row 4:  Ch 1, turn.  As for Row 3 in the FOOT SECTION, working across the ch 17 as
appropriate.


Row 5:  Ch 1, turn.  (V-stitch in ch sp of next V-stitch, sc in next sc) three times.  Sk 1 st.  
V-stitch in next st.  Sk 1 st.  Sc in next 15 st.  Sk 1 st.  V-stitch in next st.  Join w/sl st to top
of turning ch.

Row 6:  Ch 1, turn.  V-stitch in ch sp of next V-st.  Sc in next 15 sc.  V-stitch in ch sp of next
V-st.  (Sc in next sc, V-stitch in ch sp of next V-st) three times.  Join w/sl st to top of turning
ch.

Row 7:  (V-stitch in ch sp of next V-stitch, sc in next sc) four times.  Sc in next 14 st.  V-stitch
in ch sp of next V-stitch.  Join w/sl st to top of turning ch.

Row 8:  Ch 1, turn.  V-stitch in ch sp of next v-stitch.  Sc in next sc.  Sc2tog to combine the
next two stitches into one.  Sc in next 9 st.  Sc2tog to combine the next two stitches into one.  
(Sc in next sc.  V-stitch in ch sp of next V-stitch) four times.  Join w/sl st to top of turning ch.  
32 stitches in row.

Row 9:  Ch 1, turn.  (V-stitch in ch sp of next V-stitch.  Sc in next sc) four times.  Sc2 tog to
combine the next two stitches into one.  Sc in next 7 st.  Sc2tog to combine the next two
stitches into one.  Sc in next sc.  V-stitch in ch sp of next V-stitch.  Join w/sl st to top of
turning ch.  30 stitches in row.

Rows 10 - 22 (or as desired):  Continue in pattern (V-stitches in V-stitches, sc in sc) without
further decreases.

CUFF SECTION:

Row 1:  Ch 2, turn.  Dc in next 29 st.  Join w/sl st to top of ch 2.  30 stitches in round.

Row 2:  Ch 2, turn.  Alternate bpdc/fpdc all the way around the cuff.  Join w/sl st to top of ch
2.

Row 3:  Ch 2, turn.  Alternate fpdc/bpdc (to maintain rib pattern) all the way around the cuff.  
Join w/sl st to top of ch 2.

Row 4:  Ch 2, turn.  Alternate bphdc/fphdc all the way around the cuff.  Join w/sl st to top of
ch 2.  Fasten off.  Sew in end.

AFTERTHOUGHT HEEL:

Round 1:  Hold sock, toe down, with the enormous gaping hole for the heel facing you.  
Attach yarn to the second stitch from the right along the bottom of the opening.  Ch 1, sc in
same sp.  Sc in each st along the bottom of the opening over to within 1 st of the end of the
bottom of the opening.  Sc3tog the last stitch of the bottom of the opening, the leg of the last
stitch in the row between the top and bottom of the opening, and the first stitch of the top of
the opening.  Sc in each st along the top of the opening to within 1 st of the end of the top of
the opening.  Sc3tog the last stitch of the top of the opening, the leg of the last stitch in the row
between the top and bottom of the opening, and the first stitch of the bottom of the opening
(which is the stitch just before the stitch where you joined the yarn).  Do not join.

Round 2:  Beginning in the top of the first sc from Round 1, sc in each sc along the bottom of
the opening to within 1 st of the end of the bottom of the opening.  Sc2tog the last stitch of the
bottom of the opening and the first stitch of the top of the opening (which are the stitches
immediately before and after the Sctog from the previous row).  Sc in each sc along the top of
the opening to within 1 st of the end of the top of the opening.  Sc2tog the last stitch of the top
of the opening and the first stitch of the bottom of the opening (which again are the stitches
immediately before and after the Sctog from the previous row).  Do not join.

Rounds 3 -8:  Repeat Round 2.

Joining Row:  Sc in first st along bottom of opening.  Ch 1.  Remove hook and insert front to
back through corresponding st along top of opening.  Pull through loop and ch 1.  Sc in next st
along bottom of opening.  Ch 1.  Remove hook and insert front to back through
corresponding st along top of opening.  Pull through loop and ch 1.  Continue joining until all
opening is closed up.  Fasten off.  Sew in end.
