| Ribs On Top Socks Combining elements from some of my other sock patterns, these socks are created from the irresistible and generous Red Heart Heart & Sole sock yarn I've come to enjoy so much. After the toe (which is worked in rounds), the sock is worked in rows. The trick is to join the rows just before the first rib, so the joining becomes invisible. |
| Size C Hook Two 1.75 oz skeins Red Heart Heart & Sole (color shown is Rustica) Stitch Markers (or scraps of yarn in a contrasting color Tapestry Needle Gauge: 6 sc = 1"; 6 rows of sc = 1" Toe (Worked in rounds; increases are made in the increases of the previous round for ease in counting.. This pattern is written for a shoe size 9/10, medium to slightly wide width.) Ch 10. Round 1: 2 sc in 2nd ch from hook (10th ch does not count as first stitch in round. There will eventually be 3 sc worked in this ch st, not including the 10th ch). Sc in next 7 ch. 3 sc in last ch. Sc in next 8 ch (across bottom of foundation ch). Mark last stitch. 20 stitches in round. Round 2: 2 sc in top of first sc of Round 1. Sc in next 9 st. 2 sc in next st. Sc in next 9 st. 22 stitches in round. Round 3: Sc in next st. 2 sc in next st (where increase was made in previous round). Sc in next 10 st. 2 sc in next st (where second increase was made in previous round). Sc in next 9 st. 24 stitches in round. Round 4: Sc in next 2 st. 2 sc in next st. Sc in next 11 st. 2 sc in next st. Sc in next 9 st. 26 stitches in round. Round 5: Sc in next 3 st. 2 sc in next st. Sc in next 12 st. 2 sc in next st. Sc in next 9 st. 28 stitches in round. Round 6: Sc in next 4 st. 2 sc in next st. Sc in next 13 st. 2 sc in next st. Sc in next 9 st. 30 stitches in round. Round 7: Sc in next 5 st. 2 sc in next st. Sc in next 14 st. 2 sc in next st. Sc in next 9 st. 32 stitches in round. Round 8: Sc in next 6 st. 2 sc in next st. Sc in next 15 st. 2 sc in next st. Sc in next 9 st. 34 stitches in round. Round 9: Sc in next 7 st. 2 sc in next st. Sc in next 16 st. 2 sc in next st. Sc in next 9 st. 36 stitches in round. Round 10: Sc in next 8 st. 2 sc in next st. Sc in next 17 st. 2 sc in next st. Sc in next 9 st. 38 stitches in round. Round 11: Sc in next 9 st. 2 sc in next st. Sc in next 18 st. 2 sc in next st. Sc in next 9 st. 40 stitches in round. Lay the sock flat and by eye, determine and mark the 15 stitches across the top center of the sock. Marking both sides will allow you to make sure those 15 stitches are evenly centered across the top of the sock. Foot Row 12: Sc to within 1 st of the first marker. Sl st in next st. Ch 1, turn (markers can be removed now). Sc in next 39 st. Join w/sl st to top of ch 1. Row 13: Ch 1, turn. *Fpdc around next 3 sc. Sc in next sc.* Repeat between * three more times. Sc in each sc to end of round. Join w/sl st to top of ch 1. Row 14: Ch 1, turn. Sc in next 39 sc. Join w/sl st to top of ch 1. Row 15: Ch 1, turn. (Fpdc around next 3 fpdc's. Sc in next sc) four times. Sc in each sc to end of round. Join w/sl st to top of ch 1. Continue alternating Rows 14 and 15, increasing as follows, until sock is 4 inches from the back of the foot when tried on, ending with an even-numbered row (Row 46 in the example shown). Next odd-numbered row (Row 47 in the example shown): As for previous odd-numbered rows, ch 1, turn. (Fpdc around next 3 fpdc's. Sc in next st) four times. 2 sc in next st. Sc in each st to last stitch in row. 2 sc in last stitch in row. Join w/sl st to top of ch 1. 42 stitches in row. Next even-numbered row (Row 48 in the example shown): As for Row 14. Alternate "Next odd-numbered row" and "Next even-numbered row" four more times so that a total increase of 10 stitches (over 10 rows) is made. There will now be a total of 50 stitches. Continue in pattern without increasing until sock is 2-1/2" from the back of the foot when tried on, ending with an even-numbered row (Row 58 in the example shown). Next odd-numbered row (Row 59 in the example shown): By eye, determine the top left uppermost stitch. Work in pattern through this stitch. Do 25 fsc's (single crochets with the foundation stitch attached). Skip 25 st. Sc in next two stitches. Join w/sl st to top of ch 1. Continue in pattern until desired height is reached (30 rows above heel opening in example shown). For a narrower ankle, I decreased during the 5th, 7th and 9th row above the heel opening by doing 2 sc tog on either side of the ribbing. Tip: After completing a few rows above the heel opening, I like to dig out the other end of the skein and work the heel. This way, you don't have to worry about having enough yarn to come back and do the heel at the end. Cuff Row 1: Beginning with an odd-numbered row, ch 2. (Fptrc around next fpdc. Dc in next fpdc. Fptrc around next fpdc. Dc in next fpdc) four times. Dc in each st to end of round. Join w/sl st to top of ch 2. Row 2: Ch 2, turn. Alternate fpdc's and bpdc's all the way around the top of the sock. Join w/sl st to top of ch 2. Row 3: Ch 2, turn. Alternate bphdc's and fphdc's all the way around the top of the sock. Join w/sl st to top fo ch 2. Fasten off, sew in end. Heel Round 1: Join yarn to 3rd stitch from right on bottom of heel opening. Ch 1, sc in same st that ch 1 came from. Sc in each st across bottom of heel opening. Sc 2 tog joining last stitch in bottom of heel opening with first stitch in top of heel opening. Sc in each st across top of heel opening. Sc 2 tog joining last stitch in top of heel opening with first stitch in bottom of heel opening. Sc in next st. Do not join. Rounds 2 - 10: Sc in each st all the way around the opening, but sc 2 tog on either end, always combining the stitches immediately before and after the sc 2 tog of the previous round. This way, you evenly reduce by 2 stitches per round. 10 rounds works well here. End with the sc 2 tog at the right side of the bottom of the heel opening. To close the opening, after each sc across the bottom of the heel opening, rmove hook, insert top to bottom through the corresponding sc in the top of the heel opening, re-insert the hook into the loop of the sc just completed on the bottom of the heel opening, and pull through. Yo, pull through, and continue with the next sc on the bottom of the heel opening. If the number of stitches across the top and the bottom do not correspond, it may be necessary to combine two top stitches or two bottom stitches into one at some point. |
