BERET (Headband is made first and the rest is worked separately and then attached)

Headband:  Leaving an 8" or so tail, ch 8.

Row 1:  Allow 8th ch to serve as first st in row.  Sc in 3rd ch from hook and in next 5 ch.  7 stitches in row.

Row 2:  Ch 1, turn (turning ch serves as first st in row for this and all subsequent rows).  Sc in back loops of next 5 st.  Sc in turning ch from previous row.

Rows 3 - 66:  Repeat row 2.  Fasten off.  Seam the short ends of the band together using the tail.  An invisible seam can be made by sewing the back loops of the last row to the foundation chain.

Hat section:  Ch 5, join w/sl st to form a ring.

Round 1:  Ch 1 (turning ch does not count as first stitch in round).  In ring, work sc hdc, and 9 dc.  11 stitches in round.  Mark last stitch, but do not join.

Round 2:  2 dc in each st.  22 stitches in round.

Round 3:  (Dc in next st, 2 dc in next st) through end of round.  33 stitches in round.

Round 4:  (Dc in next 2 st, 2 dc in next st) through end of round.  44 stitches in round.

Round 5:  (Dc in next 3 st, 2 dc in next st) through end of round.  55 stitches in round.

Round 6:  (Dc in next 4 st, 2 dc in next st) through end of round.  66 stitches in round.

Round 7:  (Dc in next 5 st, 2 dc in next st) through end of round.  77 stitches in round.

Round 8:  (Dc in next 6 st, 2 dc in next st) through end of round.  88 stitches in round.

Row 9:  Hdc in next st.  Sc in next st.  Sl st in next st.  Ch 1.  Sk next st.  3 dc in next st (shell made).  (Sk next st.  Sc in next st.  Sk next st.  Shell in next st) to within 1 st of end of row.  Sk next st.  Join w/sl st to top of ch 1.

Row 10:  Ch 2.  Dc in same sp that ch 2 came from.  Sc in center st of next shell.  (Shell in next sc, sc in center st of next shell) through last shell of previous row.  Dc in same sp that beginning ch 2 came from.  Join w/sl st to top of ch 2.

Row 11:  Ch 1.  (Shell in next sc.  Sc in center st of next shell) through last shell of previous row.  Shell in next sc.  Join w/sl st to top of ch 1.

Rows 12 - 15:  Repeat Rows 10 and 11.

Row 16:  Ch 2.  Hdc in next dc, sc in next dc, hdc in next sc.  (Dc in next sc, hdc in next dc, sc in next dc, hdc in next dc) through end of row.  Join w/sl st to top of ch 2.  88 stitches in row.

Row 17:  Ch 2.  Dc in next 5 st.  Dc2tog to combine the next 2 st.  (Dc in next 6 st.  Dc2tog to combine next 2 st) through end of row.  77 stitches in row.

Row 18:  Ch 2.  Dc in next 4 st.  Dc2tog to combine the next 2 st.  (Dc in next 5 st.  Dc2tog to combine next 2 st) through end of row.  66 stitches in row.

Assembly:  Place headband around outside of hat, right sides together.  Sc through each row end of headband and each st in last row of hat.  Fasten off, sew in end.

FINGERLESS GLOVES (Make two)

Leaving a 12" or so tail, ch 22.

Row 1:  Allow 22nd ch to serve as first st in row.  Sc in 3rd ch from hook and in next 19 ch.  21 stitches in row.

Row 2:  Ch 1, turn (turning ch serves as first st in row for this and all subsequent rows).  Sc in back loops of next 19 st.  Sc in turning ch from previous row.

Rows 3 - 28:  Repeat row 2. 

Do not fasten off.  Seam the short ends of the wrist section together using the tail.  An invisible seam can be made by sewing the back loops of the last row to the foundation chain.

Row 4:  (worked in the stitches at the ends of the 28 rows of the wrist section).  Ch 1.  Sk 1 st.  3 dc in next st (shell made).  (Sk 1 st, sc in next st.  Sk 1 st, shell in next st) until a total of 7 shells have been made.  Join w/sl st to top of ch 1.

Row 5:  Ch 2.  Dc in same sp that ch 2 came from.  (Sc in center st of next shell.  Shell in next sc).  Repeat through last shell in round.  Dc in same sp that ch 2 came from.  Join w/sl st to top of ch 2.

Row 6:  Ch 1.  (Shell in next sc.  Sc in center st of next shell) through last shell in round.  Join w/sl st to top of ch 1.

Rows 7 - 8:  Repeat Rows 5 and 6.

Row 9:  Ch 4.  Skip sc where first shell would have gone.  This is making the hole for the thumb. (Sc in center st of next shell.  Shell in next sc).  Repeat through last shell in round.  Join w/sl st to 1st ch in the ch 4 that started the row.

Rows 10 through 13:  Repeat Rows 5 and 6.

Row 14:  Ch 2.  Hdc in next dc.  Sc in next dc.  Hdc in next dc. (Dc in next sc. Hdc in next dc.  Sc in next dc.  Hdc in next dc) through end of row.  Join w/sl st to top of ch 2.  Fasten off, sew in end.
